Cape Cod 08'

As we have for the past five years , we went to Falmouth, Cape Cod for the week of July 4th. Like every year, we had a great time, and the kids had fun exploring the beaches. This time we rented a house a bit closer to the beach, so we really were able to live the beach bum life style for awhile. While we were there, Josh and I took a 2.5 mile bike ride to the beach and back. He wanted to do more, but I was DONE. For the first time, we took the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. We spent the day in a town called Oaks Bluffs. It was a family friendly environment with everything from a merry go round to an arcade. The beach there was beautiful with a sandbar that went about 50 yards out into the water. This was another great trip, and we captured many memories that you can see in our 400 picture photo album. I'll be sending invitations to view it soon.

Josh get a new "Mate's Bed" today. He was finally complaining about not fitting in the firetruck bed anymore. It was time to move on. He really likes the new bed. Tonight he takes it for a test sleep.

New Swing Set

We got a new swing set for the kids. A neighbor needed the space for a garden, and we needed a swing set. Perfect symbioses . The picture is a bit blurry, but it gets the point across. I'll upgrade to a better picture later in the week.

"Alex" in Wonderland

This evening we took Josh and Alex to see the Dover MS production of Alice in Wonderland. The production was wonderfully done, and this was the first play for both of them; they both truly enjoyed it. While Josh said his favorite part was the snacks at intermission, Alex favored Alice's songs. After the play, Alex got to meet Alice. She was truly star struck. I think we will have a lot more theater in our future.

Up on Two Wheels

Yesterday Josh asked, "Daddy, can I ride my bike on two wheels tomorrow?" Well, today was the day, and sure enough, after about ten minutes of wobbles and weebles, Josh was up on two wheels. Within a half-hour he made it around the block and was doing "burn-outs". It was a big day. Below is the photo album of the big event.

Opening Day was Great

Today was opening day for the Wappingers Falls Yankees as they faced the Wappinger Falls As. Joshua Zangerle went 3 for 3 tearing three home runs down the third base line at each at bat. Each of Josh' s hits were from pithes- no tee was needed. Josh continued to demonstrate speed on the base paths. In the field Josh caught a grounder as the short stop and chased down a few other balls that got away.

Josh's opening day for tee ball is this Saturday at 10:45. I have sent the directions to those people who needed them, but just in case I will post them here as well. After the game we will have burgers and dogs at our house. All are welcome to attend. If someone could bring a video camera that would be great. I'll probably be helping the coach and won't get to film much.

Obama Rsponds to "Small Town America" Comments

Here is the actual quote:

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them,... And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Anyone who is willing to be even semi-honest with themselves about these comments can realize that there is a great deal of underlying truth here. It is the fact that people cannot even have discussions about core issues underlying poverty without having love of God and country questioned that really demonstrates what a precipitous juncture our Democracy has reached. When Hillary Clinton, who in posing as a candidate for President who is supposed to represent the more liberal end of the spectrum, criticizes Obama for such comments and boards the same bang-wagon driven by the Republican candidate John McCain, that people who are looking for rigorous, intellectual debate begin to feel all hope fade. Obama's words below should be the punctuation to this, hopefully brief, diversion because they make "sense". ~If that is allowed anymore.

Josh's First Tee-Ball Practice

Josh had his first tee-ball practice last night. It was really exciting. The coach had the kids do ground ball drills, run the bases and take a hit off the tee. Josh did great and hit a nice grounder down the third base line. When we got in the car and asked him if he had fun he said, "Yeah I had fun. When is the next practice!" He really dug it. AWESOME!

***Opening Day***

Opening Day is April 19th at 11am. It is at the Robinson Lane Baseball Recreational Area in Wappingers Falls. Everyone is invited back to our house for a barbecue lunch after the big game.

We got a call from Josh's Tee Ball coach. He is officially a member of the Wappingers Falls Yankees. How appropriate!

The first practice is scheduled for the week of March 31st. Opening Day is scheduled for April 19th. The time and other information will be announced.

Bobby-2006 (Emilio Estevez)

My wife and I just watched the film, Bobby. It is an interesting take on the assassination of what could have been one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. The film focuses on the lives of the people working at The Ambassador hotel where RFK was killed. Each of the people that the film focuses on seems to represent a particular social issue that was relevant to the time. The film touches on everything from the countries growing resentment for an unpopular war in Vietnam to the struggles immigrant groups faced as they labored to become "American". The most ironic and sad realization that the movie drives home is that it very easily could have been set in our country today. The quotes from Kennedy used throughout the movie force us to realize all that was lost when RFK was killed. It seems that we could have had a 30 plus year head start on some of the very issues we are facing today.

"But, in part, to be an American means to have been an outcast and a stranger, to have come from the exiles' country, and to know that he who denies the outcast and the stranger still amongst us, he also denies America." ~RFK

It is amazing to consider how relevant these words are for our world today. Everyone in this country is a descendant of an immigrant some where in their lineage. The very vocal "patriotic" group that is actively working to exclude new immigrant groups from the American experience today are perhaps committing the most unpatriotic act of all. It definitely seems to be a perversion of what it means to be an American if we are shoving groups out of the experience because of fear, or hatred or any other bias.

Again, Kennedy's words echo from beyond the grave and seem to interject into our debate today. Recently, Barack Obama stated that he would take the nuclear option "off of the table" when dealing with Pakistan. He was roundly criticized by Hillary Clinton who intoned that no options should be considered "off the table". The irony here rests in the fact that these words were spoken by the first lady to President Clinton who claims to have modeled himself on his idol, JFK. It seems that in the very crowed presidential political field candidates are "making" issues of non-issues; especially given that fact that these newly acquires positions sometimes seem to fly in the face of what the members of the party want to hear.

Bobby was a tragically sad film because of the ending that we all knew was coming as soon as the first frame flickered onto the screen. But perhaps most relevantly for our world today, Bobby was a disturbing film because it highlighted for us the fact that in a field of over twenty presidential candidates, during perhaps the darkest period in American history, we look to the candidates and find no one that is truly inspiring groups of young and old, and who truly seems to be the genuine article who can and will lead us through these turbulent times.
